What Causes Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is a problem among many men today.  While there is no one factor that is responsible, it is possible to pinpoint the cause and treat the problem.  Before you can understand what causes this problem, however, it is necessary to first understand how it all works.

When an erection occurs, there are several systems involved that enable the body to complete the process.  These include the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system, psychological and stress-related factors. And local factors that involved the physical aspect of the body and the penis itself.  In order for an erection to occur, there has to be blood flow to the penis, as well as hormonal components.  An erection occurs in response to touch, smell, and auditory and visual stimuli that trigger a reaction in the brain.  The information received at that given time is then sent to the nervous system so the body can register, both physically and psychologically what is taking place.

Many of the components mentioned above are present during an erection.  These factors can differ from one situation to another, but several must occur in order for an erection to happen.  If these factors are not present, erectile dysfunction could occur.

Erectile dysfunction is generally divided into two categories: psychological and physical.  The psychological cause is directly related to the mental response that takes place during sexual intercourse or activity leading up to it.  The physical aspect is directly related to an organ or system in the body. 

There are many psychological factors that could be responsible for causing erectile dysfunction.  Sometimes placing undue importance on the act at hand can cause the erection to go down, or possibly even not occur at all.  Stress is also another possible factor.  The more stressed you are, the less likely you may be to perform.  These two factors can also be closely related, because if you are unable to perform, this may place undue stress on you, thus furthering your problem.

Physical factors are often more problematic, whereas unlike psychological factors, they may be more difficult to treat.  When there is a problem directly related to the penis or another important bodily organ, it may be difficult to retain an erection.  This can be related to many factors, so if you suspect you are having physical difficulties, it is suggested you see a physician to try and diagnose, then fix the problem.

Psychological factors such as stress can be relatively easy to alleviate.  This is because once the stress has been removed, it will be easier to perform once again.  The physical factors are not often so easily taken care of, as the problem must first be diagnosed, a cause established, and a treatment chosen. 

Treatment is available for erectile dysfunction, so if you suspect you are suffering from this, you are advised to see your doctor in order to determine the exact cause of your problem.  Once this s established, you will then be able to treat your erectile dysfunction effectively and successfully, as well as possibly prevent the problem from ever occurring in the future.
